Bit of an update
Not been on here much lately, busy doing other stuff. You know, that stuff that makes life “interesting”. Photographically though I haven’t been doing much of that lately either.
If you know me, I like to try out cameras in an effort to find one that can inspire me, is ergonomically a working tool, learn how to use it, and produces great photos too …. although of course any camera can do that, it’s the brain behind the camera that makes that difference. So whilst away I had a dabble with a Sony A7Cii for about 6 months. It was good, really good and technically was more than capable at just about everything. But here’s the thing. Technically there was everything there that you needed as a camera, as a tool. In fact, there might have been too much if all you want to do is make photos. It was nice and compact … although being full-frame it had to usually have big lenses. And the size of gear (particularly full-frame lenses) was becoming a negative. Also, it never felt right for me to quickly find my way round, to inspire me, to make me pick it up. It was like a computer, nothing more, nothing less. I also felt that along with the lenses it was a lot of money that was mostly sat doing not a great deal. So after those 6 months, I wanted a change ……. AGAIN.
Lo and behold, I found my way …. my rambling way …. back to Fujifilm. But not to the latest and greatest. Back to a camera that I used a number of years ago and loved. The Fujifilm X-T3. From a tactile point of view it suited me. Sure, it’s a crop sensor camera. However, I was looking through the thousands, nay hundreds of thousands of photos I had in Lightroom, and the quality and sharpness from a Fujifilm crop sensor camera is really not a lot different to a full-frame sensor from Canon, Nikon and Sony. The X-T3 is also a camera that I have always found my way round easily and it did all that I wanted a camera to do. And because it’s an older camera, I was able to pick it up comparatively cheaply as well. Secondhand, the one I got was £599, it had just 24 actuations on it and it was looking brand new. An absolute bargain for what you get. Being crop sensor, the lenses tend to be small. So I got the 56mm f1.2 as I always on that lens for my fashion and portraits, a 23mm f2 (35mm full-frame equivalent) for general photography, and an 18-55mm kit lens if I need something a bit wider. And all bought secondhand. The whole package when traded in, left me with an additional £1200 from the sale of the Sony gear. Financially a sound decision I thought.
So anyway, it’s back to an old, trusted friend in the X-T3. I’ve been trying out the whole kit in readiness for a fashion shoot next weekend in Scotland. So here’s hoping it all goes well.
